A good skincare routine is vital, but sometimes it can be really difficult to figure out exactly what works for you. If you fight acne, oily or dry skin, the struggle can be even more difficult. Unfortunately there’s no one size fits all solution, so everyone has to test things to figure out what their personal solution will ultimately be.
I’m one of those people who started struggling with acne well into my 30’s and I had no idea what to do with it since the problem didn’t show up until I was 32 years old. As a result, I’ve felt frustrated, hopeless, angry and discouraged. I’m sure many of you can relate. Your face isn’t something that you can just ignore though, so despite all of my frustration, I’ve continued seeking solutions.
In this process, I learned that my acne is hormonal. Yay! An answer… but not yay, because skincare products alone won’t change what’s happening with my face, back and shoulders. Yes, that’s right I’m a victim of the dreaded bacne plague as well. *hangs head in shame* Fun times.
I’ll talk about hormonal acne since it’s the thing that I struggle with. Hormonal acne manifests itself primarily around the time that there are hormonal fluctuations. These fluctuations tend to be tied to our menstrual cycles (ladies). I find that I’ll get breakouts around the time of ovulation and during my cycle. They’re usually around the chin area, sometimes on my cheeks and occasionally around my hair line, but I’m convinced the hair line bumps are connected to my styling products and not hormones. The jury is still out on that. Full disclosure: I take Yaz birth control to keep the acne in check. It’s helped tremendously.
Even though acne is a bummer, the silver lining to this struggle is that I’ve been forced to to find stellar products that make an impact on my skin to improve the texture, reduce redness, help heal hyper-pigmentation, etc. Here’s a run down of my absolute MUST HAVE products (in no particular order). After I go through my favorites list, I’ll tell you about a couple other products that I’ve tested and what I think about them.
Dermalogica has quickly become one of the most trusted skincare lines in my collection and their C-12 pure bright serum is the crowned jewel of everything they sell. Vitamin C works wonders for the texture of your skin but I had no idea what I was missing out on until I ditched my old Vitamin C serum for this gem. It fights hyper-pigmentation and boosts the luminosity of your skin. It’s magical. Liquid gold. I use it both day and night.
This is yet another amazing product by Dermalogica! I use it twice a week on my whole face. It’s a clay masque that helps clear and prevent breakouts. YES PLEASE! Just spread it over your face after cleansing and let it sit for about 10 minutes. When you wash it off, tone your skin and put on your vitamin C and moisturizer!
Elastiderm is the nectar of the eye cream gods. I’ve used a lot of eye creams and none have ever packed as big of a punch as this product. It’s got a hefty price tag, but a little goes a long way. It usually takes about 6 months before the pot is empty. You have to get it through a physician or spa, so just call your dermatologist or spas that offer facial treatments to see if they sell it. Most of the doctors that do cosmetic procedures will carry Obagi products. I get mine through WIFH in Atlanta.
The Glow Maker is an antioxidant serum that features Vitamins C, E, Ferulic Acid, & Hyaluronic Acid. It provides fantastic, light weight moisture while helping to correct skin imperfections over time. The price of this product is astonishing! Just $27 for a bottle. I’ve never paid so little for a product that does such an amazing job on my skin. Consider me a fan for life.
Skinceuticals serums are ahhhhhmazing! Since I fight acne, I lean on their blemish & age defense serum to spot treat every day. It’s oil free as well. If your skin is sensitive to oils and you fight acne (like me), you’ll love this serum.
I learned about Oxygenetix a few months ago and wanted to give it a try. It’s a product line formulated to allow your skin to breathe through the products. Hydro Matrix is their moisturizer and it’s amazing. It feels very lightweight, non greasy and doesn’t clog pores like a lot of moisturizers do.
For face wash, I’ve opted to use a very basic, no frills cleanser from Dr. Brant, but its been discontinued so it’s going to change again very soon. Another cleanser I’ve used and absolutely love is by SW Basics. I love this one because it has very few ingredients, no fillers and it’s all good stuff for your skin. The toner is also amazing. I will switch back to this product line soon. I’ve also used a few different Miceller Cleansing Water products and I like them a lot.
